Dating online has it pros and cons, but learning how to trust someone in online dating just got harder.

Free online dating sites are not the only ones with scams, it seems. And the best online dating tips may no longer be enough.

Why? Because there’s a new trap for young players… you just might fall for a robot!

And no, you don’t have to be a uber-geek, either. Plain ordinary old love-lorn you could be the magnet.

PC Tools senior malware analyst Sergei Shevchenko says that a software robot called CyberLover “demonstrates an unprecedented level of social engineering”, mimicing online flirtation and then extracting personal information from its unsuspecting conversation partners.

As well, there is a human form of robot that also doesn’t think. As Little Miss Law says on her blog: “Two different guys emailed me, and BOTH of them emailed me the exact same thing they had emailed me a few weeks ago.

“And receiving [it] for the SECOND time… I realized that there is one thing worse than being sincerely overeager… being insincerely overeager.”

Little Miss Law says the moral of her story is that when using dating websites, “if you are going to write someone an email, please personalize it”. “Being bland is better than being creepy.”

But that ain’t necessarily so.

According to PC Tools, the artificial intelligence of CyberLover’s automated chats is good enough that victims have a tough time distinguishing the “bot” from a real potential suitor… and they remember who they’ve already ‘talked’ to.

The software can work quickly too, establishing up to 10 relationships in 30 minutes. It compiles a report on every person it meets complete with name, contact information, and photographs.

Although the program is currently targeting Russian online dating sites, PC Tools is urging people in chat rooms and social networks elsewhere to be on the alert for such attacks.

Their recommendations amount to just good sense in general, such as avoiding giving out personal information and using an alias when chatting online.

Other tips include:

  • Be honest when creating your own profile, and keep your radar up when reading others,
  • Don’t fall into window-shopper syndrome, and
  • Make a date as soon as you decide you might like someone.

There is also a difference between those two examples that is vital.

While the human robot is ego-driven, with a primary anticipatory focus front, center and below the belt, the software robot is greed-driven, with a primary anticipatory focus on your earthly possessions… probably your plastic.

One is not better than the other. As a t-shirt I once saw proclaimed: Same Same… But Different. They’re after you, they will harm you if they can. Unless that’s your idea of fun, use your common sense, keep your private details to yourself, and avoid the dating online scam headed your way.
