General valentine poems, followed by funny valentine poems, short valentines poems, valentines day poems, valentine poems to friends,  romantic valentine day poems and silly poems valentines … these are among the most popular items the ‘doers’ of Valentines Day are looking for online in 2008.

And there are a lot of them.

Those more intrigued by pictures than words, however, are searching for valentine graphics, valentine clipart,  valentine coloring pages, making valentine mailboxes, valentine heart graphics, valentine clip art, printable valentine cards,  valentine heart graphics, and valentine coloring sheets.

And yet, on blogs and ‘Dorothy Dixer’ question forums around the Internet there are two predominant questions (or variations of them) being asked:

  • Does anyone else think Valentines Day is over rated?, and
  • What Valentine Day gift should I buy my man/gf?

On the second front, Yahoo’s front page has two large ads for flowers, and a list that says these are the most popular Valentine’s Gifts for Her:

  • Heart Pendants
  • Ugg Shoes

MSN also has a large graphic ad for flowers, plus ads for Last-minute Valentine’s Day gifts, beautiful diamond engagement rings, Plus-size dresses for every body, Save 10% – Red tulips + Free vase, Perfect valentine’s gifts, Send a dozen roses, laptop computers and fragrance.

And, nicely segueing back to our first point, “Anti-valentine: Top ‘I hate love’ songs”.

So, why? What is Valentine’s Day history? According to the History site,

“Every February, across the country, candy, flowers, and gifts are exchanged between loved ones, all in the name of St. Valentine. But who is this mysterious saint and why do we celebrate this holiday? The history of Valentine’s Day — and its patron saint — is shrouded in mystery. But we do know that February has long been a month of romance.”

According to the Greeting Card Association, an estimated one billion valentine cards are sent each year, making Valentine’s Day the second largest card-sending holiday of the year. (An estimated 2.6 billion cards are sent for Christmas.)

Approximately 85 percent of all valentines are purchased by women. In addition to the United States, Valentine’s Day is celebrated in Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, France, and Australia.

But cynicism has set in. In a local newspaper poll two thirds of respondents branded it ‘commercial crap’ or a ‘non-event’ , and questions from the last 11 minutes on Yahoo Answers included ‘Does anyone else think Valentines Day is over rated?’ and ‘Pros and Cons of valentines day?’

But overwhelmingly, the questions were pleas for help in choosing appropriate gifts.

Women with small kids often find it hard to get time for themselves. So, while it may not seem “traditionally” romantic, the most lovely gesture I’ve heard of was a husband who booked some time at the hairdresser for his wife, and encouraged her to after that go out clothes shopping, while he spent all day alone with the kids.

Is Valentine’s Day just for lovers?

Because in Colombia, Valentine’s Day is called El Dia del Amor y la Amistad (The Day of Love and Friendship), so it’s not just about love, you celebrate friendship too. So are you guys giving anything to your friends??? I’m writing a little note for each and maybe give them candy or a stuffed animal… : )

…and…

You can still tell them you love them, even every day of the year. Valentines day is just a day that celebrates love and relationships and so forth. Just enjoy it. You only have to put up with it one day of the year then you can go back to being your lame self.
