The institution of marriage has become a hot potato on both sides of the Atlantic lately. Extreme views make the headlines daily. Interestingly, it seems that the argument most often centers on the ‘rights’ of heterosexual marriage versus same-sex marriage.

And while the gay union debate is straight forward, the [tag]traditional marriage[/tag] argument sways all over the shop.

For instance, just in the last 24 hours or so,

  • Gay and lesbian couples came from around Texas to the Travis County Tax Assessor’s office Wednesday afternoon, requesting marriage licenses. Those requests, by law, were denied.
  • Concord lawmakers began what is expected to be a marathon public hearing starting on two bills to expand gay rights. HB 437 would let gay couples form spousal unions with all the benefits, duties and protections of marriage.
  • The Indiana Senate passed a proposed constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage.

while

  • Matt Daniels, president of the Alliance for Marriage, castigated Arizona advocates of traditional marriage for ‘overreaching’ after Arizona became the first and only state in the nation to turn down a measure defining marriage.
  • Bishop John Hine, the chairman of the Committee for Marriage and Family Life, called for the Church and society as a whole to support the idea of secure, stable and loving family homes.
  • U.K. Conservative Party leader David Cameron pledged tax breaks for married couples if he becomes prime minister to help keep families together in the poorest areas.
  • Faced with marriage rates that have fallen to their lowest levels in more than 100 years, family campaigners in Britain and Europe are sounding the death knell for marriage.

and

  • The Kentucky Senate passed a bill yesterday that would outlaw health insurance for same-sex couples and unmarried opposite-sex couples in all state agencies. UK has been considering offering the benefits since a survey showed in September that staff and faculty were interested in the move.
